What is Deuterium-Free Water? Can It Improve Your Health?

In a recent newsletter I reviewed Dr. Thomas Cowan’s book Cancer and the New Biology of Water, which talks about the damage deuterium causes to our bodies. We all consume deuterium in the water we drink, so Dr. Cowan recommends drinking deuterium-free water for better health.

Deuterium is an isotope of the hydrogen atom that occurs naturally in water. “Heavy water,” or water that contains a larger amount of deuterium, is used in some nuclear reactors as a coolant. When heavy water is made, the by-product of its manufacture is “light water,” or water that’s deuterium-free.

How does deuterium harm our bodies? Deuterium is a toxin that accumulates in our bodies as we age, and Dr. Cowan says higher levels of the isotope in our cells cause changes to our DNA. These mutations have been linked to chronic diseases like heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s, among others. Dr. Cowan also believes accumulated deuterium speeds up the aging process of our bodies.

Drinking deuterium-free water may prevent and treat disease and extend life. Dr. Cowan cites a study that showed men with stage 4 prostate cancer significantly increased their survival time by drinking deuterium-free water. He’s also found that organic greens naturally expel deuterium as they grow, helping to lower the deuterium levels in the animals and humans that eat them.
