The immune system plays a vital role inside the body. It protects you from harmful germs and substances that can make you sick. This system consists of different organs, proteins, and cells that work together to fight off invaders, such as harmful bacteria, viruses, and toxins.
Consuming a healthy and balanced diet that includes fruits, vegetables, and meat, can help you boost your immune system. Here are some foods that can give your immune system a boost.
Citrus Fruits
After catching a cold, most people turn straight to vitamin C. This is because it helps the immune system become stronger. The production of white blood cells, which fight off infections, is increased by Vitamin C. Nearly all citrus fruits have a high vitamin C content; some of these fruits include:
Broccoli
Loaded with vitamins and minerals, broccoli is a supercharged vegetable. It is packed with vitamins A, C, and E, as well as antioxidants and fiber. The key to keeping its power intact is to steam it or eat it uncooked.
Garlic
In almost every cuisine in the world, garlic is used. Not only does it add a little zing to your food, but it can also help slow down the hardening of the arteries and help lower blood pressure. The garlic’s immune-boosting properties come from a hefty amount of ingredients containing sulfur, such as allicin, which can help with inflammation.
Turmeric
In treating both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, this bright yellow, bitter spice has also been used as an anti-inflammatory for years. Curcumin is the principal ingredient in turmeric, and high concentrations, such as supplements, can help reduce muscle damage.
Kiwi
Kiwis are naturally filled with a ton of essential nutrients, including folate, potassium, vitamin K, and vitamin C, just like papayas. To fight infection, vitamin C boosts the white blood cells, while kiwi’s other nutrients keep the rest of your body working properly.
Poultry
Eating poultry can help decrease inflammation, which could improve the symptoms of a cold. Chicken and turkey are both high in vitamin B6. The nutrients in poultry are helpful for growing new and healthy red blood cells. Try making a broth with boiled chicken bones to help gut healing and immunity in the body.
Shellfish
Shellfish contains zinc, which our bodies need so that our immune cells can function as intended. The body needs zinc to help develop cells that make up the immune defense, protect against inflammatory damage, and act as an antioxidant. Some shellfish that are high in zinc are oysters, crab, lobster, and mussels.
It is extremely important to take care of your immune system, and doing so can be very easy. Whether it be staying physically active, eating healthy, getting vaccinated regularly, or maintaining healthy lifestyle habits, keeping your immune system happy is an achievable goal for almost anyone.

"Dr. An is great and so is her staff. I saw her about 24 hours after an ankle injury - she recommended PRP injections. Now it's 3 days after the PRP treatment and I'm back to teaching and practicing yoga. I highly recommend Campbell Health Center."
