The Link Between Joint Pain and Heart Disease

Researchers have found a surprising link between joint pain and heart disease: the inflammation of rheumatoid arthritis. As an autoimmune disease, rheumatoid arthritis attacks joint tissues and causes inflammation of the joint lining. The inflammation then causes the acceleration of clogged arteries and heart disease. In order to reduce risk for heart disease due to inflammation, experts claim yearly cardiac risk assessment and aggressive medical management is necessary.

How Joint Pain Affects Your Heart

According to a study published in the Journal of Internal Medicine, patients diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis may have heart problems within one year. A separate study published in the Journal of the European League against Rheumatisms also found strong links between heart disease and RA. Researchers in the study did a meta-analysis of almost 100,000 patients and found RA increases the risk of heart problems by 60 percent over people who don’t have the disease.
