Our bodies are electric. Electrical charges occur in every cell to communicate messages, generate energy, regulate vital functions like heart rate and respiration, and circulate blood throughout the body. Historically, our bodies have maintained bioelectrical balance through our physical connections to the earth.
But today, most of us spend our lives wearing shoes, riding in cars, walking indoors, and sleeping on elevated beds. We become disconnected from the earth, depriving our bodies of the natural electrical currents that keep us healthy. This can lead to chronic illness and inflammation.
Researchers are learning that one of the easiest and most effective ways of restoring good health is through “grounding,” or reconnecting the human body to the earth. Getting grounded can be as simple as walking or exercising barefoot outdoors at least 30 minutes each day. If you have access to a beach, walk barefoot on the sand and in the water. Walking on grass or soil is also beneficial.
There are other grounding methods, like electrode treatments or sleeping on a bed that’s connected to a metal rod inserted in the ground outside. Researchers continue to study new ways of grounding the human body.
Grounding offers a variety of benefits:
There’s still a lot we don’t know about our need to be connected to the earth, but research tells us the earth’s endless supply of free electrons helps us stay healthier.

"Dr. An is great and so is her staff. I saw her about 24 hours after an ankle injury - she recommended PRP injections. Now it's 3 days after the PRP treatment and I'm back to teaching and practicing yoga. I highly recommend Campbell Health Center."
